It is hard to get the password from a computer without getting an email sent to you. You said it was an iMac? If so you will have to take it to an Apple store or mail it in for them to recover the pictures and stuff like that… hope this helps you.
Depending on the model, sometimes you can bypass a boot password by taking a stick of ram out or adding a stick of ram and holding down cmd+option+p+r and let it chime twice. Then take out the additional ram or put it back in depending on your ram situation.
