I find iCloud is expensive can I have my own back up procedure with an external hard drive. Do I have an option? If so please explain. Thank you Narayanan lakshmanan INDIA

You’re only back up your data, not the whole operating system. When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. If you need more space in iCloud, you can upgrade to a larger storage plan. You can upgrade your iCloud storage plan from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. Choose from a total of 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB. Apple has flipped the switch on its new pricing scheme for iCloud storage. Now, 50GB of storage costs $0.99 a month, a storage bump from the previous 20GB tier, while 200GB now costs $2.99 (down from $3.99) and 1TB costs $9.99 (previously $19.99) Have you looked up Apple’s pricing in the last couple of years? 50GB runs $0.99 per month https://www.theverge.com/2015/9/16/93410

You don’t need the extra storage beyond the base Apple give you for free! All you need to do is go into your settings to alter what is pushed up to iCloud. What is important to being good about backing up! This is where most people fail. They start off with great effort and slowly slide into not backing up often enough if at all! If you can stay with it go for it! All you need to do is enable TimeMachine and have a large enough external drive. Even still I would recommend setting up two drives so you have a back up for your backup!
