Chosen Solution
I have a imac that does not boot; the startup chime comes up every 2 or 3 seconds and the display is black. I don’t have the boot disk. Pls recommend fixes that I can try myself. I unplugged the cable and attached it. there are no other devices connected to it now.
Zap the PRAM; hold down CMD+OPT+P+R while turning on the machine, keep it held down until you hear the third startup chime, then release and see if it boots. Hold down the OPTION key at startup and see if the boot volume selector comes up. If it does, you may have a hard drive or OS problem.
