While I’m using it, the display turns off. Looks like the display backlight is perhaps still on (in dim light I can see it as very dark grey). I can get Siri to shut it down (don’t need to see the display for that.) Sometimes I can get it to go back on just by waiting a few minutes, sometimes I can get it to come back on if I use the home button and on/off switch together and get it to restart. Took it to the Apple Store “Genius” Bar and we did a complete restore. Didn’t make any difference to its behaviour. Last couple of weeks it’s been more difficult to get it to come back on, and this week it was off for a few days. Tonight I managed to restart it and it came back on, so I’ve backed up again ready for more serious measures. Thinking it might be the connection to the display, display data cable ???

If you can still see the image in the background in dim light the inverter may be the problem. If it was me I would probably replace the LCD. You may be right in thinking that the connection may be loose. If it’s not the cable then your LCD is slowly dying and it will continue to get worse. Your apple genius isn’t much of a genius if all he did was a reinstall.
