Chosen Solution

Hi, first time posting but I have been a tech for a few months and I have run into a bit of an issue that maybe you guys can help me with. I have a customer with a ipad 4 that he has returned to us multiple times because the battery has died. We replace it and 2-3 months later like clockwork he is back with a battery that no longer seems to function. As soon as the battery is replaced the ipad works fine but I know in 2 months time he will be back with what is now essentially a paperweight. My first guess is that he leaves it plugged in at all times but he claims otherwise. Hopefully somebody else has seen and can give me some insight into this issue

verify that he is using a certified charging cable. The only possibility I can think of is a damaged charging IC that is throwing the wrong amps to the battery or possibly seeing the battery as dead when its not. The only real way to check this would be to try the “dead” battery in a different iPad or to measure the amps at the battery connector.

It really looks like a U2 (1608a) Ic power chip issue.
