I recently was given an iPhone 5 from a friend of mine that had a destroyed screen. She said she dropped it while getting into her car. The screen and digitizer were destroyed so i replaced it with a new assembly. Before and after the repair the phone won’t display anything on the screen but it continues to make the charging tone every few seconds when plugged into an outlet. In addition the phone gets really warm while plugged into an outlet, especially the camera module. The outside of the phone is in pretty good condition aside from the screen so i can’t think that she damaged it that much. The contacts for the LCD and digitizer looked fine through a 10x loupe and the screen works well on other devices. The phone is occasionally recognized by iTunes and I have hard reseted the device 6-7 times. I’m very familiar with the inner workings on any generation iphone but this one has me very perplexed. The inside of the device looks immaculate and I’ve inspected most areas of contact. Im guessing a replacement battery would help but I wanted to see if anyone on here had some advice before I placed an order. I’ve reviewed similar posts about these issues but none of the remedies have helped.
The batter almost never gets damaged because of a simple drop. So I would rule that out. When you say, itunes recognizes the phone “occasionally” what do you mean exactly ? Try disconnecting the screen and connect it to your computer, will it be recognized ? And most importantly if you leave it like this for a few minutes, and gently feel arround with your fingers what exactly is getting hot, or does it only get that hot, when the LCD is connected ? These questions could lead us to the problem. if you have a good camera you should try to provide us with a clear picture of the lcd connector on your logicboard.
I’m literally having the same issue, but mine wasn’t dropped. I replaced the display about a month ago and worked fine. Woke up one night and it worked, next minute I turn it on and the display goes black backlight still on and responds to the power button (display dims on and off) I turned it off and then tried to turn it back on but nothing. Plugging it in makes the no display chime and while on gets extremely hot.
I have the same problem. The logic board looks ok in my opinion. iTunes does recognize the iPhone but the screen won’t turn on, no backlight and also the touch screen is not responding. The metal cover gets hot after 15 seconds. I have replaced screen, battery and dock connector. But still the screen will not turn on. I tried it both mounted in the iphone as bare on a table.
I have the same problem I replaced the screen and the screen worked fine after a little pressure was applied to close the screen the display got fuzzy with lines I believed it to be a bad connection I removed the screen entirely and really seated it and no back light I connected it to iTunes and it recognized it but no display I have reset the phone several times still no display
It will sometimes show up as a recognized device in iTunes and other times it shows no response. It gets hot regardless of the screen being connected. The back gets warm and the camera module gets very warm. I switched out the battery from another 5 and it has become more responsive with iTunes but nothing else has changed. Here’s an image of the motherboard and its connections. http://i57.tinypic.com/2zi3hbl.jpg
happy to heat that.
I’m experienced at working on iphones…I found this thread, had the exact same problem… Worked fine until drop then no pic and getting very hot. Was ready to scrap it when I found and followed this advice and removed and reinstalled the logic board. - thanks all and mrcvideo. Carefully reinstalling and inspecting/reseating all connections. The hot prob went away! and was recognized in itunes, but screen still black. Tested w another screen and it works great!!! Thanks for posting prob and tips/solutions!!! And thank you ifixit you guys are awesome and have the best website and tools!! PS screen connectors not properly seated can cause odd problems and boot loop
I’m having the same issue. Approximately 4 weeks after a display replacement, the display suddenly went black while laying on the desk. Initially the backlights were still working, but didn’t come back on after a reset. The phone still gets recognised by itunes, however, turns very hot after a few minutes. The heat comes from the mainboard area. A battery replacement did not fix the issue. Reassembling did not fix the issue either. Looking at the only solution posted so far, I suspect it is caused by a shortcut that somehow damages the display but are unable to confirm this theory. I’m afraid that this might happen again after a few weeks if I replace the display, since I don’t know what actually caused the display to fail.
The phone was not dropped (iphone 5S) but would not boot after a hard reset connected to iTunes and did complete restore but no display, changed LCD screen no display , the rear camera gets warm replaced battery but to no avail. No display please help. Mushtaq
