Hi, I bought an iPhone off eBay germany. It always gives the same restore error in iTunes : “The iPhone [iPhone] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred [error 50].” Anyone got a idea how to get the iPhone to work? I’ve tried 2 different computers with firewall off, different USB ports, different cables but keep getting this error at around 65% of the restore process. I’ve tried restoring in the DFU mode too, still the same error pops up. I read somewhere it might be the Baseband IC which needs to be replaced. Would replacing the Qualcomm MDM9615M help? Anyone who has had the same issue or knows about it? Kinldy help me out of this. Haris

Hi. I am from South Korea. I have an IPad Air with a cellular function. I had the same problem of updating error code 50. I knew it might be the faulty baseband because I could not use the cellular function since several month ago. I tried everything suggested but could not succeed. It always stopped in the middle of updating and especially at the point of firmware updating , about 65 percent point. As I thought Baseband IC is the hardware causing the trouble of updating, I tried to heat up the IPad body uniformly with a hair dryer covering it with a blanket to keep its temperature. And it succeeded! Just one shot and it finally passed the 65% where it always stopped! But I could not update (I don’t know why) but I had to restore it and it came out as a new IPad! I suppose heating caused the malfunctioning IC to work somehow. I hope my experience to be a help to someone having a similar problem like me.

I have just managed to fix a phone with an Error 50 on it. NONE of the help on this forum helped so what i did was this. I held down the Home Button and Power Button for 10 seconds whilst the phone was connected to my Mac. I then let go of the Home button BUT I KEPT HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON during the whole of the sync process and hey presto it worked. Yes i had a sore finger by the end but it has been 2 weeks and my phone has been in 3 shops who couldn’t fix it INCLUDING the Glasgow Apple shop. Hopefully this will work for you guys as well.

Heating up the phone with a hairdryer while the updating process was happening got me back into the phone - and stopped the error 50 code from happening!!! Can’t believe it. I tried all of the other methods mentioned earlier multiple times all day but the phone always froze at the 65% (approx) mark…. Once the restore process completed the carrier appeared and normal texts were coming through to my phone - I was also able to send normal texts. As soon as I tried to call someone the carrier disappeared and the phone will only work on WIFI again. Back to where I started but at least I can use the phone on WIFI. Hmmmm…..

Heat up your phone with a hairdryer, I took the SIM card tray out (you’ll have to put ya sim back in to activate it, but it’ll heat up quicker if ya take it out) but get the hair dryer pointed at it, ensure your device gets nice and hot. Believe it or now it works, I’d been trying all week to resolve it but kept having the error 50 notices after getting to around 60/65% but try this.. Restart ya phone Click restore or update (I updated) Have a hair dryer pointed at it, ensure it gets hot and believe it or not it’ll go through. I’d like to thank whoever came up with the hair dryer solution, you’re a genius.. This forum has been a God send……

OMG, the hairdryer trick works, I’ve had a dead iPhone 5 for 2 yrs and now my Son has something to play his games on and not bug me for mine…. Outstanding!

Hello, I had unfortunately no hair dryer, so I put the iphone at about 50 ° for 5min in the oven and believes it or not it has worked afterwards.

Error 50 is baseband modem. Reball modem will solve

thanks, i’ve tried 6 times use hairdrier, and finially succeed.

You could try to flash your device with 3uTools. http://www.3u.com/tutorial/articles/180/

the hairdryer method worked for me!!! Thanks so much

YES!!! This does work! I was freaken a little when my screen got all funny because the phone temp was waaaaaaaay high. Try it!!! So happy!

OMG. I can’t believe that worked! Apple were going to charge us £260 for a repair? IT WORKED INSTANTLY. If it doesn’t work, make sure you try it twice. We wrapped in a sock and blew a haridryer at it. We also blew inside the sim insert, AND IT WORKED. This is incredible.

As stupid as it sounds, blow drying directly into the sim card works wonders. My iPhone 6 stopped updating around 65%, but it is finally getting restored

yupppppppp it works, just heated by putting sim outside, for a minute, it passed 50 error

I have had this problem more than once. Make sure the phone goes into full dfu mode. This means the screen has gone black-stays black while connected to your pc-then gets recognized as a device in recovery by iTunes. 65% is about when the device will ‘wake up’ during a restore if only in recovery mode.

  1. Device off
  2. Hold power / home for 8-10secs
  3. Release power while home stays pressed for 10-20secs (depends on iTunes recognizing phone)
  4. You should have a black screen and iTunes should be asking you to restore it. It might take 2-3 times for the phone to completely restore. Hope this helps

Ok guys ,I spoke to few phone experts and what i heard from them wasn’t a good news.but can be fix. Error 50 caused by “baseband IC” its a hardware thing.you can not fix this problem unless you replace this IC There are technicians out there doing this repair.but depends on where you live.if you live in Asia it cheaper to replace the IC. otherwise it might be not worth paying high cost for repair. but there were some cases rarely the error fix itself restoring over and over again for few times.GOOD LUCK

Hello Haris, have you tried doing a forced restart to solve this problem? I recommend you try it and if it doesn’t work out then try use the RecBoot software to get out of the recovery mode. Please see the instructions here: http://www.technobezz.com/iphone-that-is

Like said many times before, this is a problem with the baseband ic. I have solved this by reflowing ( heating the chip to the point where the solder balls reset themselves.) If this doesn’t work, the BBIC cannot be replaced. It is paired with the processor and Contains the iMei of the phone. A reball of the chip would be required.

This issue happen when the finger print doesn’t work try to put original finger print button which comes with your iphone and any original LCD Its works with me with iphone 5S & 6.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gxi5cqz… This works!!

solution is rather simple. Shut down iTunes, go to finder, open images folder; right-click photos-library; select show package contents and delete the folder “iPod Photo Cache”. Job done

Estuve buscando todo el dia y toda la noche, lo que hice fue lo siguiente, al estar en recovery el iphone lo conecte y deje presionado el home boton durante todo el proceso y funciono muy bien ahora mi iphone 5c ya funciona

Slightly heating the board while restoring worked but did anyone experience the touch going unresponsive?

I tried the hairdryer under a towel thing and have managed to restore my iPhone. I don’t know how long it will stay ‘fixed’ for but at least this puts off buying a new one

For me - that didn’t do it…. Same agin: error 50

I phone 5s erroro 50

OMG! You guys are lifesavers! The hairdryer trick WORKED!!!! Unbelievable! Thank you, thank you, thank you :-) You saved my son’s phone!!! :-)

Thanks a lot, it worked !!! that’s incredible, I spent two days searching for a solution and then the hair dryer worked perfectly well ! thanks !

Had the same problem with an iPhone 5C, tried different workaround with no success, came here, read this post, thought “that’s crazy, come on”, read @johnbap’s post answer, read all other answers, decided to try. Worked like a charm. About two years later, thank you very much @johnbap .

Ha! I thought the people saying the hairdryer trick worked were just trolling, so because I was so frustrated I thought I’d try it, and &&^& me gently with a chainsaw, it only bloody well worked! I am impressed with the person who worked this out, kudos to you. My phone now completed the RESTORE and this procedure helped to fix my original problem. Thank flipping God.

It is indeed a baseband issue. But baseband ic cannot be replaced.

Hairdryer worked for me also sim card slot and next to it and back then it went through

wooow guys! the blower trick worked! I have no idea why it works but it surprisingly does! This will solve the issue!

It deffo worked for me first time if it did not for you then you are doing sth wrong !
