My iphone 7 fell out of my pocket while is was skating and it dropped from less than 1 meter with a case directly on an iron bar which cracked the screen really hard. The screen was not responding, nor was it showing anything on the screen itself, completely black. I have some experience with replacing iphone screens so my first thought was “the screen is just broken if I replace it, I will be able to use it again or at least get my pictures of it”.

I replaced the screen yesterday and against all my hopes and dreams the iphone did not turn on when I plugged it in. I left it plugged in for a couple of hours and I could feel the iphone getting a little bit warmer from the battery so I knew it was charging. It was just not turning on. I just can’t wrap my brain around what happened inside the phone as I have previously dropped an iphone from a crane and it still worked. I tought the only reason for an iphone to truly be dead was through water damage but not via a drop from such an idiot height. Is there anything else that needs replacing in the phone besides the screen or something else I can try to troubleshoot. Again the phone doesn’t really matter it’s the pictures on it that I really need. Kind regards, MV

It sounds like you might have damaged a chip on the board with the fall which is relatively common with iphones, does the frame appear to be bent at all? That’s one of the clear signs of this possibility. A good thing to test would be whether or not the device shows up when plugged into a computer, this could show whether the phone is actually not turning on or if the display is bad because it does sound like the phone is at least receiving power. Another possibility is you blew the backlight on install because you always want to have the battery disconnected while installing displays (or doing anything really for that matter) since this is a pretty common error for people to make.
