I have a 3rd gen classic iPod. Replaced the battery and swapped out the original hard drive with a compact flash memory card. When I plug it in to my computer iTunes does not recognize it. The screen shows the Apple then the drive with the “!" Does this mean the cable and/or the logic board are bad?

iPods will not sync via FireWire after the hard drive is replaced with flash storage. You need to use a Y-cable to sync it. One end should be plugged into a FireWire charger, and the other end into the computer.
