Pretty soon after I got my macbook pro 2018 I managed to crack the black plastic piece that covers the hinge on the inside. Everything works fine but it makes an uncomfortable noise when you open and close the laptop. I’ve been using it this way for years but I’d like to repair it before I sell it. Does anyone know anything about this piece - what it’s called and whether it can be repaired without spending a bunch of money at the Apple Store?

It’s called the clutch cover. Finding it may be a problem. I’d try an eBay search or contact the iFixit team and see if they have one. Apple Part #: 923-02500 It’s also here: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/MacBook-Pr
