I have a broken display but the $500 display is too much for me. Is it possible to replace it with a cheaper display, maybe one of similar size?
If you can settle with a lower quality level there are chinese suppliers selling all over the world cheaper retina screens. You’ll have to do the job yourself of course but you can save some money if you’re ready to trade a bit of quality against price. However you’ll have to look for an exactly compatible part, that’s the key word, “similar” doesn’t mean much technically. Since iFixit who’s hosting us both sells these parts, please don’t ask me to provide any external links.
Sadly you’re hitting one of the most sought used system! The 2015 models all have the better scissor keyboard and offer onboard USB-A, HDMI & Thunderbolt 2 ports & SC card slot. Compared with the newer models which only offer Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports only. People are also aggressively keeping their systems working as such parts are becoming harder to find and are going for a premium! The cheapest I can find right now is $480 USD. You might find one a bit cheaper but it maybe blemished. So take a gulp as you have no choices here, sorry.
