I have an iMac Intel 27” Mid 2011 with what looks like a video card problem. When I boot the system, I hear the startup sound, but get nothing on the display. When I connect it to an external monitor, I get all kinds of colored blocks (see image). What do I need to replace to fix this? Is it worth fixing?
Thank you.
Yes, you do have a failing GPU board. As for worth fixing… That depends on what your needs are. If you are finding the system was just not able to support the graphics or processing load then its likely a good time to look for a new system. Maybe fixing it for someone else in the family would be a good investment. Update (10/19/2020) Presently iFixit is out of stock so you’ll need to look elsewhere. Here’s the info you’ll need to find one. This series used one of these GPU boards AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB, Apple P/N 661-5967AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB, Apple P/N 661-5968AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB, Apple P/N 661-5969 Do make sure you get an Apple version of the board as the firmware is custom to Apple. Otherwise you’ll need to flash the board.
