My cursor started acting erratically around 2 weeks ago. It stops responding at all, then jerks around, clicking random things. I sort of noticed the cursor would act ok, then after using the computer for some time, stop working. I contacted Apple and they were not much help. I tried an SMC reboot and this did nothing. Recently, my partner took out the battery and took out the trackpad and cleaned it with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Using the computer without a battery doesn’t appear to help, so don’t think it’s a bloated battery. The cursor/trackpad is still acting erratically after doing this. It works perfectly fine if a mouse is plugged in. Doing a diagnostic test, all I get is VFD002 but I have no clue if this is related or not. Any advice or help? Does the trackpad just need to be replaced? It seems odd this would just be randomly happening. Update (05/17/2018) Also, nothing appears to be wrong with the battery or the trackpad
I had this same machine come in with the same issue last week. After checking the battery (it was fine), I ran Symantec Endpoint protection and got rid of the virus that was attached to an Adobe Flash install download. Also cleaned out the Startup items in the User log in. Problem was gone.
The error code points to a display issue: VFD001 – VFD005 - Display issues encountered I’m wondering if the iSight cable is fully seated. The Keyboard, Trackpad & iSight connections all use the internal USB bus. If one of the devices gets noisy it can mess up the bus causing the tracking of the trackpad to become jerky. Try disconnecting it first to see if the tracking is better. The fan will likely slowly get faster as the sensor within the iSight camera will be disconnected. Once you reseat the connection it should recover. Just make sure you pull the power when disconnecting & reconnecting the cable.
