Chosen Solution

Hello everyone. Hoping someone may have some guidance for me. I have a model # 110.28102310 Kenmore. The washing machine will agitate fine, but whenever it enters spin mode, it will start to speed up and eventually the basin always to go out of balance. After 5 or 10 seconds, there is a thud sound, like the basin hitting the side wall, and then the spin cycle will stop. I will also get a error code of UL for “unbalanced”. Any thoughts? I have read several reviews of people with similar issues, but they never mention hearing the thud sound. I’m not sure if new suspension rods will fix the issue or not, hence why I’m here. Not sure if this helps or not, but as I look at the basin from above, it does appear that it sits closer to the back of the machine rather than the front. And yes, I have ensured that the washer is balanced. Thank you in advance for your time!

The variation in control signals to the motor to spin the tub up to speed is how the washer detects that the basin is not balanced. In a balanced load, the control signals sent to the motor will be smooth and consistent with almost no variation. I would guess others’ suspension rods just weren’t worn enough to let it bang against the side wall or they didn’t sit there and wait long enough to hear or experience it. I would take it apart to verify my thoughts before buying any parts. You may discover something else is broken like a suspension rod mount point.

Cause 1 Motor Coupling The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. If the washer is overloaded, the motor coupling will fail in order to protect both the motor and transmission. The motor coupling can also fail due to normal wear. Inspect the motor coupling to determine if it is broken. If the motor coupling is broken, replace it. Cause 2 Drive Belt Inspect the drive belt to determine if it is broken or if it is loose on the pulleys. If the drive belt is broken or loose, replace it.
