Looks like my Macbook Pro has crashed. System keeps restarting on its own with a white screen suggesting a Kernel Panic kind of situation ( please see pic attached for reference).
I tried basic troubleshooting using Disk Utiltiy. There my internal hdd ( I have two 2 partitions of 250 GB each) with OSX installed appears to be greyed out. Repair disk gives the Error : “Disk Utility cant repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.” What are the possible options I have to fix my system? Do i need to re-install / reformat my OSX? I do have a cloned backup / disk image made using Carbon Copy Cloner on an external drive. Would this help? What are the steps to follow in this case? Please guide me with possible solutions. Thanks System info - Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) OSX - 10.9.5 (Mavericks)
Ah! Your hitting the shoe cobblers dilemma! Clearly if you go the shoe cobbler to get your heal replaced he can’t do that with your foot in the shoe! Which is exactly the same problem here. The OS partition is the Foot stuck in the shoe which you are trying to repair. So we need to get your foot out of the shoe ;-} The easiest way is to create a bootable USB thumb drive (32 GB is all you need) Format the thumb drive with GUID partition mapping and a Journaled file system. Then run the OS installer for the OS you are using on your system. Once you have it setup all you’ll need to do is boot up under it run Disk Utilities Disk First Aid and that should fix it. If the drive comes back bad this time you’ll need to replace it and I would strongly recommend you replace the HD SATA cable as well as they tend to fail and if you have one of the order revs the spec of the sable can’t support SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives as the data rate exceeds its ability to transfer without errors.
